The director of public health at Hertfordshire County Council in the UK, has announced that local food banks could be soon giving out free e-cigarettes in order to help smokers “save money and improve health”.
While vaping bans are spreading like wildfire across the US, the UK keeps encouraging smokers to switch to the safer alternatives. Jim McManus, the director of public health at Hertfordshire said that as part of a new project aimed at reducing the health and financial burdens from smoking on disadvantaged locals, free e-cigarettes could soon be handed out at food banks.
This project is being trialled in Hertfordshire, and several food banks in the area have already stepped forward to take part in the project, which McManus said that he hopes will be up and running by the end of the year.
The public health director explained that the project will be designed, run and evaluated by a research team from a UK university. Named the ‘Hertfordshire Tobacco Control Strategic Plan 2019-22′, the proposal showed a gap in health inequalities between people from working class backgrounds due to smoking, which this initiative aims to narrow.
